How a construction company improved margins and profitability

Case study
organization

The organization

This client is in the construction industry and focuses on construction demolition and excavation.

challenge

The challenge

The client is involved in large and complex construction projects that involve a lot of key stakeholders and specific timelines. It used a variety of different systems to keep track of its projects and mainly relied on manual data entry. As a result, the company couldn’t easily determine which jobs were profitable or unprofitable, and it didn’t know that certain types of projects were always unprofitable.

Also, the systems it used for bidding and tracking weren’t compatible with one another. For this reason, the client couldn’t track its actual income and expenses against its budgeted amounts.

The solution

Our team implemented Microsoft’s Power BI to seamlessly connect the client’s data systems. It now has:

  • Real-time insights and visibility into project health.
  • The ability to track project level status during the development phase in conjunction with critical milestones and timelines.
  • A single source of truth as the project evolves and variance analysis of actuals to budget along with a detailed breakdown of the areas driving the variance.
  • The ability to unlock insights from past projects.

The outcome & benefits

The client has seen significant margin improvements because it can better estimate how profitable projects will be. The company now has a clearer picture of how projects are performing, which helps the client make better decisions. It’s also able to get in front of issues before they occur, making it more proactive than reactive.
