BDO to co-write leading tax publication

January 31, 2019

BDO is proud to announce its selection as co-author of an essential publication on the taxation of private corporations.

The Taxation of Private Corporations and Their Shareholders is a go-to resource for tax practitioners, accountants and lawyers across Canada. Published by the Canadian Tax Foundation, the publication is available both as a standalone print volume and as part of the organization's online collection, TaxFind. The fifth edition is scheduled for release in 2019 and will be published online as chapters are completed. It will feature extensive updates and new chapters.

“We are honoured that the CTF invited us to take part in this essential project,” said Rachel Gervais, Partner and GTA Group Tax Service Line Leader at BDO. “With so much changing for the taxation of private corporations, this new edition could not come at a better time. Our tax professionals around the country are working to ensure it provides the information Canadian tax practitioners need to help their clients adapt.”

Much has changed for private corporations since the publication was last updated in 2013.

In 2018, the federal government passed into law wide-reaching new rules in two key areas: tax on split income, or TOSI, and passive income. The new edition will address how these rules affect private corporations and how tax practitioners can help clients minimize their tax burden while remaining compliant.

Almost 40 partners from BDO's tax practice are contributing to the fifth edition. As the accounting co-author, BDO will provide 10 chapters; Gowling WLG, the legal co-author for the publication, will also contribute 10 chapters.

“This honour highlights the role BDO has played in the ongoing public conversation on the taxation of private corporations,” said Dave Walsh, Partner and Tax Service Line Leader at BDO. “When the federal government first proposed significant tax changes for private corporations in 2017, we were concerned about their impact on many of our clients — and on Canadian competiveness. We are proud that our input — along with that of the tax community at large — helped fine-tune these changes. This honour reflects BDO's continued engagement with the tax needs of Canadian business owners.”
