Toronto, ON, September 20, 2017 – BDO Canada LLP will continue to fight hunger this fall with Farm Credit Canada’s (FCC) Drive Away Hunger campaign, the largest employee-led food drive in Canada.
Marking its 10th year since first partnering with FCC, BDO hopes to donate 800,000 meals to the campaign. From September 20 to October 13, offices across the firm will host a variety of events to raise awareness of hunger in their communities and collect food or financial donations. One hundred per cent of donations will directly benefit local food banks.
“Drive Away Hunger has become a key part of our corporate fabric,” said CEO Pat Kramer. “In a decade, our efforts have grown and evolved, as our people have embraced this important initiative. Its values reflect our own, allowing us to give back to the communities in which we live and work. We look forward to participating once again this year.”
The concept of Drive Away Hunger originated in 2004 when a Farm Credit Canada employee drove an open-cab tractor trailer around Ontario for eight days to collect nearly 60,000 lbs of food. The campaign has now grown to become the largest employee-led food drive in Canada. Since its inception in 2004, FCC has collected over 33 million meals through its Drive Away Hunger campaign.
“Our partners are a vital support to this campaign, and we’re honoured that BDO has been an important part of it for 10 years,” said Michael Hoffort, FCC president and CEO. “Last year alone, the hard work and commitment of BDO and its employees resulted in a donation of nearly 850,000 much-needed meals to Canadian food banks.”
According to Food Banks Canada, over 850,000 Canadians relied on food banks each month last year ― with children accounting for one-third of the total. Nearly one in six households that rely on food banks are currently or were recently employed.
Thanks to the continued engagement of our communities, BDO has provided enough food and financial support to deliver over 2.7 million meals to our local food banks.
