BDO expands Tax service line with the admission of eight new Tax Partners

Toronto, Ontario - September 25, 2017 – As part of its continued growth across the country, BDO Canada LLP (BDO), a leading professional services firm, is pleased to announce the admission of eight new Tax Partners during 2017. These new Partners bring significant knowledge and experience to the firm, and further strengthen the existing Tax team.

Joanne Sun joined our Expatriate Tax group in January, coming to the firm from PwC. Working out of our Vancouver office, she brings extensive experience providing global expatriate services to clients in cross-border executive compensation issues and expatriate policy design and implementation. Joanne has additional experience at Deloitte as well as other financial service companies.

Mitch LaBuick is based in Edmonton and joined BDO in our Indirect Tax group in February from MNP. Mitch has over 25 years of experience with indirect tax, including many years at Deloitte and the Canadian Revenue Agency where he assisted with the implementation of GST, the transition to HST and back to provincial retail sales tax in British Columbia and the HST transition in Ontario. Mitch focuses on large and medium-sized business reorganizations, cross-border and non-residential transactions, and commodity tax planning.

Dan Lundenberg now leads our U.S. Corporate Tax Services in Canada from the downtown Toronto office. He joined BDO in March from Grant Thornton bringing over 20 years of U.S. corporate tax experience. Dan also has spent time at other firms including EY and has considerable publishing and public speaking experience. Dan is a U.S. trained tax lawyer with wide-ranging knowledge relating to the U.S. tax needs of Canadian businesses.

Dan Kostenchuk also joined BDO in March coming to the firm from PwC in Winnipeg. Dan is a Tax Partner in our Private Client Services Tax group providing proactive tax planning and compliance services to private companies and high net worth individuals. He has many years of experience assisting clients with the tax aspects of estate planning, succession planning, compensation planning, purchasing and selling businesses, and business restructuring. Dan is also an instructor at the Asper School of Business and a group study leader for CPA Canada’s In-depth Tax Course.

David Elrick is based in the Winnipeg office and brings over 12 years of experience providing corporate and personal tax planning strategies for family-owned businesses, entrepreneurs and large corporations to the firm from KPMG. David joined our Transaction Tax team in May and specializes in advising clients undergoing acquisitions, dispositions and business restructurings. He has provided comprehensive advice on acquisition structuring, tax due diligence, tax modelling, and post-acquisition services. David is a member of the CPA Manitoba Tax Committee and the Canadian Tax Foundation and is active in tax education, leading tutorials for the Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada In-depth Tax Course.

Trevor Thomson is a Tax Partner in our Transaction Tax team based in Calgary, bringing over 22 years of professional experience to the firm in June. Joining BDO from Deloitte, Trevor provides taxation and business advisory services to privately-owned and public businesses. He has successfully assisted a number of clients with mergers and acquisitions, transaction advisory, corporate reorganizations, estate planning, equity compensation and related advisory services. He has been a presenter at Canadian Tax Foundation conferences and other industry events and has authored papers on various taxation topics for the Canadian Tax Foundation.

Kevin Yuill joined our Halifax office in July from Deloitte, bringing over 14 years of professional experience providing tax and estate planning services to small and medium-sized businesses to our Canadian Tax team. Kevin has provided tax planning services to clients in a wide range of industries and has successfully assisted a number of clients with implementing tax efficient corporate structures and estate tax minimization. Kevin also has prior experience at KPMG and Grant Thornton and has taught the In-Depth Tax course program, lectured professional development courses for ICANS, lectured at the CTF Atlantic Provinces Tax Conference and taught courses at ASCA.

Janice Russell is based in Toronto, where she joined us in our Transaction Tax team in September and is the Tax Leader of BDO’s Financial Services industry group. She joins us from Deloitte with more than 25 years of experience providing a range of tax services to clients in the financial services, private equity, and real estate sectors. Janice also brings in-depth knowledge and experience in tax matters relating to mergers and acquisitions, including many years at PricewaterhouseCoopers. She is a member of the Canadian Tax Foundation and the International Fiscal Association and is the former Co-Chair of the Canadian Bar Association/Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada Joint Committee on Taxation.
