4 ways the public sector can grow from the COVID-19 experience
As a result of the pandemic, public sector organizations need to stabilize and prepare for future disruptions. Following these four strategies can help strengthen and improve government operations.
1. Identify and prioritize mission critical value streams
- Determine the highest priority processes, all dependent system applications, and technology infrastructure for the department or organization.
- Decide what services and applications should be prioritized in order to maintain service levels if self-isolation occurs again.
- Targeting mission critical value streams will enable governments to deliver services to Canadians without interruption.
2. Review and update business continuity plans
- Conduct a post-mortem of the response to the pandemic.
- Reviewing what happened will allow the organization to implement improvements and increase the robustness of its response to future crises.
3. Develop asset tracking and management strategy
- Government IT assets that employees required to work remotely may have been distributed without appropriate controls and tracking.
- A fulsome strategy will allow governments to execute their fiduciary responsibility for sound fiscal management.
4. Develop KPIs and data models to predict additional waves
- Predictions of a second/third wave should be segmented by industry and geography.
- Data-centric predictive models will help governments proactively set appropriate policies by sector.
