Growing Forward 2 is a five year program in effect April 2013 to March 2018. The program retains the previous risk management programs AgriStability, AgriInvest, AgriInsurance and AgriRecovery as well as new programs directed at strategic initiatives.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada administers three broad federal programs with the remaining programs on a cost-shared basis delivered by provinces and territories. The three federal programs are: AgriInnovation, AgriCompetitiveness and AgriMarketing.

AgriInnovation supports investments that target research and development activities that bring innovation to the sector as well as those that bring the results of research and development to market through adoption/commercialization. AgriCompetitiveness makes directed investments that will help the sector adapt to rapidly changing and emerging global and domestic opportunities and issues, respond to market trends and enhance business and entrepreneurial capacity. Agrimarketing helps farmers and food processors compete in markets in home and abroad by creating and maintaining access to markets and taking advantage of market opportunities.

There are also Growing Forward 2 (GF2) programs customized for each province.  For example, certain provinces provide funding assistance through GF2 with transition and succession planning.  With so many farms being transitioned to the next generation over the foreseeable future, this program can help to cover the accounting, tax and legal costs associated with such a reorganization.
