BDO's Business Restructuring & Turnaround Services (BR&TS) practice helps businesses facing financial stress restructure, both operationally and financially. We work collaboratively with your management team to gain an understanding of your company’s business model and issues causing the financial difficulties. Once the underlying issues are identified, a strategic options analysis is performed to identify appropriate solutions to restore financial performance and preserve stakeholder value. We leverage our relationships and experience with most Canadian financial institutions to implement a restructuring plan.
In situations where the implementation of an informal restructuring plan is not attainable, the BR&TS practice includes Licensed Insolvency Trustees who can help by using legislative tools—such as a proposal to creditors under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act or a plan of arrangement under the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act—to restructure the business.
In situations where a formal wind-down of the business is the only option, we can act as bankruptcy trustee, providing a process to evaluate creditor claims and potentially limit exposure to directors' liability and personal guarantees.
In addition, our BR&TS team advises lenders, including major Canadian financial institutions, credit unions, alternative lenders, and private lenders in either formal court-appointed mandates or through out-of-court advisory engagements when a lender’s client is under financial stress and loan recovery is uncertain.
