Deducting expenses as an employee

Date: 1 Apr 2011

Under Canadian tax rules, employees can only deduct expenses that are specifically allowed. For details, read our tax bulletin titled Deducting Expenses as an Employee which looks at the types of expenses you can deduct as an employee and the planning you should consider to maximize your deductions. This bulletin also discusses the differences in the rules for commission salespeople and the types of strategies they can use to maximize their deductible expenses. Finally, the bulletin looks at situations where special rules apply – these include artists, musicians, tradespersons, and railway and transport employees.

This tax tip is a publication of BDO Canada LLP on developments in the area of taxation. This material is general in nature and should not be relied upon to replace the requirement for specific professional advice. The information in this tax tip is current as of 1 Apr 2011.
