The Tax Benefits of Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED)

Date: 26 Aug 2011

The Canadian government has recognized the benefits to the Canadian economy that are achieved when Canadian businesses are encouraged to be more productive by investing resources in Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) and foreign businesses to perform their SR&ED in Canada. As a result, the Canadian tax benefits for SR&ED activities carried on in Canada are among the most generous SR&ED incentives in the world. If your company is developing a new product, improving an existing product, improving production methods, or working to reduce the environmental impact of its manufacturing process, your company may be eligible for SR&ED incentives.

For information on Canadian SR&ED incentives, read our bulletin titled The Tax Benefits of SR&ED. This bulletin explains both the federal and provincial SR&ED tax incentives available and how they could apply to your business. Ask yourself whether your business is performing SR&ED and how you could benefit. The savings will make it worth your while.

This tax tip is a publication of BDO Canada LLP on developments in the area of taxation. This material is general in nature and should not be relied upon to replace the requirement for specific professional advice. The information in this tax tip is current as of 26 Aug 2011.
