Tax Consequences for U.S. Persons in Canada |
If you are a U.S. citizen or Green Card holder and are resident in Canada, you continue to have obligations for U.S.
tax purposes, even though you are paying taxes in Canada. In these circumstances, you are required
to file annual U.S. income tax returns regardless of where you live or how long you have been away from
the U.S. There are other tax obligations you need to be aware of too – such as special reporting
rules if you hold Canadian RRSPs or RRIFs, the U.S. tax treatment of investments in certain types
of non-U.S. corporations, as well as how the U.S. estate tax applies to you. Read our tax bulletin
entitled Tax Consequences for U.S. Persons in Canada, which outlines various U.S. tax obligations that U.S. persons need to be aware of, even while living in Canada.
