BDO and RBC barbeque for the Reading University
News Release
August 11, 2010
GRANDE PRAIRIE: BDO has partnered with RBC in support of the Grade 3 Reading University. A charity BBQ will be held on Wednesday, September 1, from 11:30am to 1:00pm in the parking lot of RBC’s main branch, at the corner of 99th Avenue and 98 Street. Grande Prairians can purchase a hot dog or hamburger and a drink for $5, with all proceeds going to the Reading University. The hot dogs and hamburgers will be provided courtesy of BDO and RBC.
Reading University is a summer program in Grande Prairie designed to help grade three students read at grade level. Up to and including grade three, students learn to read. However, when they reach grade four, they are expected to read to learn. If the students are not reading at grade level at this stage, studies show they are at an increased risk of never reaching grade level reading and comprehension. They lose interest, fade to the back of the class and lose confidence, causing them to stop raising their hands and asking questions.
The second year of the program just wrapped up at the Grande Prairie Regional College campus, where sixty students graduated after three weeks of enthusiastic professors, healthy snacks, fun-filled classroom activities and field trips. According to the organizing instructor, Charlie Kraig, “Over the three week program we have seen no less than two levels of improvement in reading and comprehension in all the students.”
According to BDO Partner, Don Blonke, “It is exceedingly important for BDO to support causes that benefit the Grande Prairie community. Without adequate literacy skills and confidence, our children are faced with an uphill battle. At BDO, we feel that the Reading University program gets to the root of this problem and isn’t just a band aid solution.”
RBC Vice President, Pat Downs, states, “Reading University is a community driven and funded initiative that focuses on supporting our youth before they can get into trouble. It is amazing what this community can do when we work together, and RBC is proud to be a part of this. I would personally like to invite Grande Prairians to come down to the barbeque to support the Reading University.”
Please come to the barbeque and purchase a hot dog or hamburger to support the Reading University in their goal to improve literacy skills in our youth.
