BDO Bean Counters help fight cancer
Relay for Life

From 7:00 pm on June 5 to 7:00 am on June 6, Salmon Arm held its eighth annual Relay for Life. The Salmon Arm BDO Bean Counters have consistently participated in the event, with the team growing in numbers each year. The Relay for Life is an opportunity to meet with some survivors and share experiences with people who are gathered for a common goal, raising money to find a cure for cancer.

This year’s theme was “Throughout the Ages” and our fearless team leader, the son of BDO Partner Norbert Frese, chose “Aerobics in the ’80s.” Sam Frese led the team in Richard Simmons exercises to 1980s music. The partners and staff all dressed the part and many laughs were shared over the costumes.

The evening started with BDO’s own Rick Hirtle and other cancer survivors making their victory lap and releasing yellow and blue balloons in celebration of everyone who has had to deal with the dreaded disease.

As Rick was the highest fundraiser in the prior year, he was the first to have the “walking stick,” specially designed for the Salmon Arm Relay for Life. Throughout the night, the stick was passed from person to person who all shared stories as to why they were at the Relay for Life.
At the closing ceremonies, we were informed that over $165,000 was raised (including $40,000 from corporate sponsorships) by everyone involved in the Salmon Arm Relay for Life, and there were still donations coming in. We are very excited that our team was the highest fundraiser again this year with $16,486.75 and Rick became the highest individual fundraiser two years in a row.

One of the Bean Counters’ fundraisers was the “Count the Beans” contest, from which the winner received an espresso maker, coffee grinder, stainless steel mugs, coffee jar and a bag of coffee beans. One guess was allowed for every donation! This was a tremendous success thanks to our wonderful clients who dropped in at our office throughout tax season to make their guesses. Some took the time to count the beans up, down, and sideways and do their mathematical calculations to come up with a number. At the relay, many participants came by our tent to take a guess as well. We are happy to congratulate Darla Crown for guessing the closest number!

The Salmon Arm partners would like to thank our staff and clients for supporting the BDO Bean Counters Relay for Life team. Without everyone’s tremendous support, we would not have been as successful as we were in raising money to help find a cure for cancer. See you next year!!!
